NOHFC Makes Exciting Announcement!
The NOHFC will provide $82,000 to the Friends of Quetico Park to develop a 30-kilometre multiple use trail network into Quetico Provincial Park.
By enhancing existing trails and developing new ones, this project will enhance opportunities for all-season recreational activities such as hiking and cross-country skiing.
“We are very pleased that the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund is supporting regional tourism and recreation activities through this funding,” said Friends of Quetico Executive Director Natasha McLaren. “Promoting Quetico Provincial Park’s potential is a key component to attracting an increasing number of visitors to our area and generating new economic activity.”

Quetico is an area rich in history, whose lakes and rivers were home to the
Ojibwe, and traveled by fur traders, voyageurs, explorers, settlers, soldiers, recreationalists and now, wilderness canoeists.
As time passed, concern for the preservation of our natural resources led the Ontario Government to designate Quetico as a forest and game preserve in 1909. Four years later, Quetico became a Provincial
Park.
In the 70's, Quetico Park was classified as a wilderness park with its goal as
"its preservation, in perpetuity for the people of Ontario as an area of wilderness not adversely affected by human activities."
To preserve this wilderness character, logging and other extraction activities were excluded from the Park; general motorboat use was prohibited, a can and bottle ban was implemented.
